Here we are – the beginning of week 3 of 4.5 weeks. The end of vegan (plus) month is in site!
But the truth is – the longer we’ve gone on, the less I’ve missed meat/pop/candy/etc. Don’t get me wrong – I still miss it, I just don’t find myself dwelling the lack of pizza as much as I was in the first week.
Another observation – a month of eating none of the stuff I really love has made me realize how large a roll food plays in our lives. I never gave food a second thought really, but now that it’s gone, something really seems to be missing from life. I know that sounds pathetic, but it’s true! What do we do on dates? What do we eat during our Friday night family pizza and movie time? TOFU?! YUCK! Sorry …. got distracted. The sad thing is, life actually seems a little boring sometimes without having a good meal to look forward to.
So – how are we feeling? No different, really. Not physically, anyway. I suppose it takes more than a month to really clean out 20+ years of junk food and start to feel the effects of healthy food. Physical aside, we are both quite proud of ourselves to sticking to such an insane diet change for a month, with very little rule bending. I think the worst rule bending was a little bit of ketchup, which has high fructose corn syrup in it. But the amount of sugar intake is literally probably less than 1% of normal, and caffeine intake has been ZERO. Meat has been zero, dairy has been nearly zero (had to scrape some cheese off a veggie-burrito once).
Next month, we won’t quite go back to “normal.” I think we’ll still outlaw pop, and minimize sugar in general. We’ll eat meat, but we’ll try to have fish more often, instead of red meat. We’ll go light on dairy. And most important of all… next month is *drum roll*
